Model NFPA 61 - Fire & Dust Explosion Mitigation

NFPA 61: Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Dust Explosions in Agricultural and Food Processing Facilities. Explosions from dust produced in the processing of many of our agricultural and process food product is not uncommon. Dust explosion accidents around the world kill hundreds and cause billions dollars in damages each year. However, these dust explosion accidents can be controlled and thereby limiting the potential for serious injuries or death, while reducing the damage to expensive process equipment.

Dust explosions happen during the conveying, processing, pulverizing and storage of a wide range of materials Having the right explosion protection system installed can make the difference.

To prevent or mitigate a hazardous condition from becoming an explosive event, IEP Technologies provides a wide range of systems like a dust collector protection system. In a typical Dust Collector application an explosion venting system would contain the following basic components: Explosion Relief Vent Panel, Pressure Detector, Single Zone Control Panel, Isolation Extinguisher and a Rotary Gate Valve.

When it comes to handling potential explosions from a dust hazard during product processing, there are three primary types of explosion prevention systems: Venting, Isolation and Suppression.

Overview: The NFPA 61 standard shall apply to all of the following:

(1) All facilities that receive, handle, process, dry, blend, use, mill, package, store, or ship dry agricultural bulk materials, their by-products, or dusts that include grains, oilseeds, agricultural seeds, legumes, sugar, flour, spices, feeds, and other related materials.

(2) All facilities designed for manufacturing and handling starch, including drying, grinding, conveying, processing, packaging, and storing dry or modified starch, and dry products and dusts generated from these processes.

(3) Those seed preparation and meal-handling systems of oilseed processing plants not covered by NFPA 36, Standard for Solvent Extraction Plants. 1.1.2 This standard shall not apply to oilseed extraction plants that are covered by NFPA 36, Standard for Solvent Extraction Plants.

A.1.1.1 Examples of facilities covered by this standard include, but are not limited to, bakeries, grain elevators, feed mills, flour mills, milling, corn milling (dry and wet), rice milling, dry milk products, mix plants, soybean and other oilseed preparation operations, cereal processing, snack food processing, tortilla plants, chocolate processing, pet food processing, cake mix processing, sugar refining and processing, and seed plants.

(1) All facilities that receive, handle, process, dry, blend, use, mill, package, store, or ship dry agricultural bulk materials, their by-products, or dusts that include grains, oilseeds, agricultural seeds, legumes, sugar, flour, spices, feeds, and other related materials
