    Pumps for Sugar & Molasses

The DESMI ROTAN® pumps are used for pumping of different sugar products from cane and beet juice to molasses and finished sugar solutions. The sugar products supplied direct from the sugar mill is chemically neutral whereas imported sugar products may contain small amounts of formic or sulphuric acid in order to prevent fermentation during transportation. Sugar products containing acid may cause corrosion in cast iron pumps so in some cases stainless steel pumps should be used. Sugar products have to be considered an abrasive liquid which is why the pump material has to be of wear resistant material. Viscosity of sugar products lies between 500 and 20,000cSt dependent on temperature and dry matter (BRIX). Therefore, it is recommended to pay special attention to the viscosity in relation to temperature when selecting a pump. Seal less pumps has been successfully used and to prevent bearing problems the pumps should be dimensioned to approximately 30 per cent of maximum speed.

Nutritional content of rice and pearl millet for agriculture sector

Hidden hunger is caused by a lack of micronutrients - vitamins and minerals (such as vitamin A, Zinc and Iron) which are essential to good health. Micronutrient malnourishment can cause stunting and blindness in children and can lower IQ as well as increasing risks for mothers and infants during childbirth and lowering resistance to disease in both children and adults. The Energy dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) analyser X-Supreme8000 can screen whole grain rice samples for concentration of iron and zinc. EDXRF is faster and more cost efficient with the low cost of around 2 cents per sample compared to around $20 with current analytical methods

Measurement of oil and water in seeds for agriculture sector

The breeding, cultivation and processing of seeds to obtain vegetable oil is a major global industry. The amount of oil in seeds and water in seeds are critical parameters which need to be understood at all stages of the industry from plant breeding through commercial agriculture to milling and processing. Oils derived in this manner are used in foodstuffs, the manufacture of biofuels and as a chemical feedstock for many products. Our Benchtop NMR Analyser - MQC instrument provides an extremely fast, simple-to-operate answer to the question “how much oil and water is present in my seeds?`

Fertilizers boosting soil productivity for agriculture sector

The principle fertilisers used to boost soil productivity are phosphate based. Monoammonium Phosphate (MAP) and Diammonium phosphate (DAP) are used for their ability to deliver Nitrogen and Phosphorus (both macronutrients) to soil as solid fertilisers. Phosphate rock is the raw material for production and is extracted from large deposits across Florida, the Southern Mediterranean into the Middle East (namely Morocco and Saudi Arabia) and on into Russia and China. To this rock, sulfuric acid is added producing phosphoric acid. This acid is then reacted with ammonia and elemental sulfur producing a sulfur enhanced fertiliser. During this process, the dust produced can potentially reach explosive levels.

High quality gas sensing solutions for agriculture

Cost-effective long term continuous measurement of CO2. Commercial greenhouse control systems measure and control temperature and CO2 concentration for optimum growth. Edinburgh Sensors’ low range CO2 Guardian NG is designed for long term continuous measurement of CO2 and is a cost effective solution for CO2 measurement in commercial greenhouse control systems. The Gascard NG CO2 is also widely used to detect CO2 in Pig and Poultry processing applications where high concentrations of CO2 are used.

Solutions for the agriculture, food & beverage industry

Our products have a number of applications in the agriculture and food industries and help with safety, analysis and tracking. Quality control for consistency of food products from field to fork is of prime concern to manufacturers and consumers alike. Making products that look, smell and taste good ensures consumers come back for more. So, with an ever-growing population demanding more food products than ever before, simple instrumental test methods are required to provide quick and reproducible data from the field to the factory via the shopping cart to the consumer. For example, the measurement of oil and fats are invaluable in the control of many foods, particularly in snack food products such as potato chips. In a similar way, the quality of the simple bar of chocolate may be judged its solid fat content using a rapid measurement which will determine a perfect product while on the farm, oil in seeds is vital to productivity and yield, ultimately dictating the price the farmer is paid for his products.

Determination of whey proteins in milk samples by capillary gel electrophoresis

One of the tests for authenticity of milk and dairy foods is the qualitative and quantitative composition of whey proteins and their ratio. Caseins dominate in cow’s milk before its processing (about 80% of total protein), whereas caseins are almost absent in the whey composition whose main components are the following:

    • β-lactoglobulins
    • α-lactalbumin
    • bovine serum albumin
    • immunoglobulins
    • lactoferrin and other minor proteins.

    Quality control of milk products

In order to maintain high quality of milk products, it is necessary to monitor process quality as rapidly as possible, so that a relevant technological process could be promptly corrected. The most important quality factors of milk products are fat, protein, moisture (total solids), SNF, sugar, salt, lactose and titrated acidity. Commonly, it takes a few hours to make such type of analyses by traditional methods. The use of an InfraLUM® NIR analyzers reduces the analysis time to a couple of minutes.
