Irrigation solutions for Melon crops - Agriculture - Crop Cultivation
There are different varieties different in size, colour and taste. Thanks to the development of new varieties it has been possible to obtain melons of better organoleptic characteristics. Its shape is different depending on the variety (round, eliptic, oval, etc) and the surface can be green, white or yellow.
The melon is a cultivation of semiarid climates with sunny days, warm nights and dry air. In humid areas with low isolation there are alterations in maturing and quality of fruits.
They can adapt to several soils, although the optimum are those well drained and not very acid (pH=6). The melon is sensitive to the lack of microelements and macroelements in the soil. Soils with high salinity affect negatively to the production.
The plantation density depends on the variety and size of the fruit we need to commercialize. The habitual is to plant with a separation between lines of 1,5 and 2m.
The demand of water depend on the environment, being the coefficient next to 0,8. It is not recommended the irrigation in the last days due to a higher concentration of sugar in most of the varieties of melon.
The best irrigation system to the melon is drip irrigation, with one irrigation line by planting line. The spacing between drippers will depend on the texture of the soil, normally among 20 and 30 cm. The lines of the dripper can be installed under the plastic.
