Intensive commercial shrimp farming began in the late 1960s led in part by technological advances and growing market demand. Today, shrimp farming is so intensive (in some cases close to 300 000 shrimps per hectare) that it requires industrially prepared shrimp feeds, fertilizing the ponds to stimulate the growth of organisms, aeration to prevent oxygen depletion and regular tidal water exchange. Solmax geomembranes have been used in some of the largest shrimp pond projects in the world. There are several key benefits of lining shrimp ponds with geomembranes. Durable and robust, the HDPE surface prevents weeds, grasses, mud and other obstructive contaminants from entering the pond. The HDPE substrate is known to reduce the suitability of the environment for bacteria thereby reducing the need for antibiotics. Geomembranes can also protect the slopes and banks from erosion and allow for easy detection and rapid removal of sediment and waste products.
Here are several factors to consider when deciding which type of geomembrane to use in a Shrimp Pond application:
- Stress crack resistance
- Tensile and elongation properties
- Tear and puncture resistance
- Duration of the project
- U.V exposure
