However, as the number of poultry farms has grown, a need has developed for more efficient manure management. The process of transporting poultry manure to cropland, while still in raw form, has become expensive in comparison to transporting nitrogen or phosphorus as a dry fertilizer. Until recently, poultry manure had not been regulated strictly, despite negative environmental impacts, causing conflicts over whom is responsible for pollution caused by poultry manure and leading to newly introduced regulations. Manure is to be an expected by-product in the poultry industry, that when left untreated, provides no substantial benefit.
