    Intensive commercial shrimp farming began in the late 1960s led in part by technological advances and growing market demand. Today, shrimp farming is so intensive (in some cases close to 300 000 shrimps per hectare) that it requires industrially prepared shrimp feeds, fertilizing the ponds to stimulate the growth of organisms, aeration to prevent oxygen depletion and regular tidal water exchange.  Solmax geomembranes have been used in some of the largest shrimp pond projects in the world.
