Cr(III) uptake by marine algal biomass: equilibrium and kinetics
In this work, biosorption of Cr(III) by the marine brown algae Sargassum muticum was studied in a batch system. Kinetics and equilibrium experiments were conducted at different pH. Equilibrium data are well described by the Langmuir and Langmuir-Freundlich isotherms. The two mass transfer models give comparable results, but they did not provide a perfect representation of the sorption data. ...

Environmental effects on oleic acid in soybean seed oil of plant introductions with elevated oleic concentration
Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] oil with oleic acid (18:1) content >500 g kg–1 is desirable for a broader role in food and industrial uses. Seed oil in commercially grown soybean genotypes averages about 230 g kg–1 oleic acid. Some maturity group (MG) II to V plant introductions (PIs) have elevated oleic concentrations of 300 to 500 g kg–1. Temperature of the growing environment during the ...

Composition, vigor, and proteome of mature soybean seeds developed under high temperature
The effects of high temperature treatment on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed composition, vigor, and proteome were investigated using mature dry seeds harvested from plants grown in environment-controlled chambers. High day/night temperatures (37/30°C) from stages R5 through R8 altered ratios of individual fatty acids to total fatty acid compared to the control (27/18°C). Concentration of ...

Soybean genetic improvement in yield and the effect of late-season shading and nitrogen source and supply
Genetic improvement in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] yield has been associated with both assimilate and N accumulation [especially from dinitrogen (N2) fixation] during the seed-filling period (SFP). Therefore, the physiological factors associated with genetic improvement may be dependent on abundant assimilate and N supply. The objectives of this study were to quantify genetic improvement in ...

Adsorption kinetics and intraparticulate diffusivities of Hg, As and Pb ions on unmodified and thiolated coconut fiber
As, Hg and Pb are examples of heavy metals which are present in different types of industrial effluents responsible for environmental pollution. Their removal is traditionally made by chemical precipitation, ion-exchange and so on. However, this is expensive and not completely feasible to reduce their concentrations to the levels as low as required by the environmental legislation. Biosorption is ...

Mechanisms involved in soybean rust-induced yield reduction
Soybean rust (SBR; caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi Syd. and P. Syd.) leads to premature leaf loss and yield reduction. The objectives of this study were to assess effects of SBR infection on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] yield and to identify causes for the yield reduction. Experiments were conducted in the 2005–2006 and 2006–2007 growing seasons at Londrina, Brazil. The five treatments were ...

Effects of macrophytes on the fate of mercury in aquatic systems
Vegetated and shallow areas such as wetlands and salt marshes but also freshwater lakes and rivers have been identified as hotspots for Hg methylation. The presence of aquatic macrophytes, the predominant primary producers in shallow waters, play an important but still poorly understood role in the fate of Hg in in these environments. The present review focuses on the influences of macrophytes ...
