A Commercial Case Study from A & A Worm Farm Waste System
We were contacted by the business development manager of a large production plant that employed hundreds of employees onsite. She was looking for practical and cost efficient ways to implement the company’s new environmental policy and to improve the company’s reputation as a responsible corporate citizen. She had identified waste management as a potential area for improvement. After researching various approaches to this problem it was decided that a customised Worm Farm Waste System was the most suitable solution.
The key factor in this decision was that virtually no ongoing maintenance is required which means that the original investment to install the system is offset by the savings made by now keeping and processing all organic waste on site. This translates into substantial savings. The plant has a cafeteria on site that services all of the employees every day of the week. The system also has no ongoing service costs which makes it even more cost effective than alternative systems. Grey water and sewage from the plant are also processed by the system. The financial manager was very happy with the cost saving projections associated with the new waste treatment system.
In relation to the environmental matters within the company’s environmental policy the new Worm Farm Waste System solved a number of problems. As mentioned, all organic waste is now kept and treated on site. The system produces a natural fertiliser that is distributed to local native plants that grow within the company grounds. Also the system was customised, at the request of the company to include an observation window and access so that the company could provide educational tours for school students to learn about the environmental benefits of natural waste treatment. The company now has a very visible and practical way to demonstrate its commitment to environmental sustainability.
The A & A Worm Farm Waste System proved to be an elegant solution to a number of important problems. Not only did the system translate into real cost savings for the company and improve the company’s environmental image but it also provided a genuine environmentally sustainable method for reducing, by 90%, the amount of organic waste going to landfill from this particular site.
We have visited the site a couple of times since the system was installed just to make sure everything is as it should be. It is rewarding to see how well the plants and trees are developing around the system.
