A Holistic Approach to Managing the EDC Issue
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are ubiquitous in our environment because of their many uses and origins in residential, industrial, livestock, and agricultural applications. EDCs are derived from both anthropogenic and natural sources, and change the function of the endocrine system, affecting the way an organism or its progeny reproduces, grows, or develops. PPCPs enter the environment through use of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals and myriad other common products related to personal care. Some PPCPs are suspected of being EDCs, but the terms are not interchangeable. The environmental and health effects of many EDCs and PPCPs are presently unknown.
