Advantages of drones for agriculture mapping: Avirtech case studies
Determining the best area for plantations and agriculture takes a long time and deep research. In the previous era, photogrammetry has become a helpful tool for plantations surveys. It uses to capture the area of ownership limit. However, photogrammetry technology needs to improve to get in-depth information about the land. The photogrammetric method using drones rides is auspicious. High spatial resolution will produce a large-scale and thorough map with area coverage of a specific area. Drones in agriculture have been rising in recent years—drones used for mapping and aerial photography. Drones have been instrumental in recent years for the daily management of large-scale agricultural fields and have been able to help farmers identify and remove weeds long before they become a problem. To explore more, let's see what advantages of drones for agriculture mapping.
Mapping drones, an agronomist's best friend to save time & money
Agronomists quickly adopt drones to map their fields and save time and money. These devices can fly over large areas and create a precise 3D spatial map of the entire field, easily uploaded to computer software. It enables farmers and agronomists to monitor their crops in real-time, find sick or dead crops, and identify water hazards such as pools, ponds, or other bodies of water that may provide additional nutrients for the plant.
Agronomists also use drones to map the land and determine where the crops grow best. They can use this data to make more informed decisions on what types of fertilizers they need to use, what kind of harvesting equipment they need, and how much water should give to their crops.
How mapping drones can help with use cases
Mapping drones are used for many different purposes, such as mapping out a new area for exploration, surveying a site for natural resources, or monitoring the environment to detect changes in the ecosystem. Drones can be equipped with sensors to measure air quality, water quality, and other environmental indicators. Avirtech delivers multiple solutions for drone mapping, as can see in the use case below.
Coconut tree counting and health detection
Located in Taliabu Island, North Maluku, Indonesia, Avirtech did tree counting and health detection for coconuts plantations. In this case, we used an RGB sensor for 6 cm Ground Sample Distance (GSD) and a multispectral Micasnse RedEdge MX sensor. The first step, the drone mapping, focused on analyzing the identification and counting of coconut trees, including trees' height. Then, it categorized each tree condition (healthy and unhealthy) using the vegetation transformation index. Estimated mapping to identify factory location, and the last ground-truthing to check product quality.
Palm oil health detection
Palm oil is a superior agricultural product in Indonesia yet faces pest challenges. In this case, we worked on palm oil health detection in Central Sumatra, Indonesia. Palm oil trees are susceptible to pests attacks, and the most are Oryctes Rhinoceros, which can cause broken foliage and crop failure. Besides, there is Ganoderma. This fungus can cause root and stem rot disease in forestry and palm trees as a pathogen. Avirtech analyzed focused mapping on healthy and unhealthy palm tree classification using vegetation transformation index in response. We used a multispectral Micasense RegEdge M sensor along with the drones. It made it easier to detect pests and fungus on the trees. In addition, this mapping drone for palm oil health detection could give macro and micronutrient deficiency for fertilizer optimization and cost-saving. For further, Avirtech innovates a gimbal spraying drone with a nozzle for pest control in palm oil plantations. Learn more here. Sugarcane pest control and detection
Different pest is different handling. Stem borers can cause severe economic losses to sugarcane production. The species result from cane weight reductions (field losses) and sugar content (factory losses). Because the naked eye cannot see the condition of the plants that these pests have attacked, we used a multispectral Micasense RedEdge MX sensor. We analyzed focusing on Near Infrared reflectance signal with various transformation vegetation index. We used reflectance for color classification to pinpoint pest-affected plants. Also, we took a further analysis for mineral deficiency.
To sum up, slow handling can lead to significant failures and losses for the business. Moreover, a mapping drone equipped with a high-resolution camera and various sensors can capture data accurately representing an entire field at once, which saves time and money.
