Analysis of Non-Volatile Pesticide Residue in Vegetables by Positive/Negative ESI LC/MS/MS
Courtesy of
Introduction
Pesticide residue analysis in vegetables has increased dramatically in recent years due to the quality improvement in the
agricultural production (1,2) and governmental monitoring of food safety (3).
In AlmerÃa, the largest agricultural region in Spain, it is very important to determine the maximum number of residues in
the highest number of samples per day. Fast, highly selective and versatile methods are essential.
The most commonly analyzed pesticides are semi-volatile compounds that are applicable to GC/MS (4-9). Nowadays,
with the increased use of non-volatile, thermally labile pesticides (imidazoles, benzimidazoles, carbamates, neonicotinoids, benzoyl ureas, etc.), techniques other than GC/MS are needed to analyze the complete range of commonly used pesticides (10).
A LC/MS/MS screening method has been developed to analyze a wide variety of pesticides in a single injection. The method is able to confirm and quantify at the ppb level in the dirty matrix of vegetable samples.
