Analyzing the lifecycle of beer case study
Courtesy of Antea Group - USA
Challenge:
A global brewing company requested Antea Group's Global Corporate Consultancy assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that result from the complete life cycle of beer and how the most common package types contribute to the 'carbon footprint' of its products. The analysis was to be conducted in the context of the entire product value chain, from materials extraction and agriculture through point of retail.
Solution:
We calculated product carbon footprints for two of the company's popular products, and analyzed multiple packaging configurations covering aluminum, glass, and plastic. The footprint calculation included all value chain inputs, from growing/mining through retail sale.
Results:
As part of our final project deliverable, we developed a tool that allows our client to understand potential adjustments to the various parameters of the footprint calculation. For example, the tool facilitates evaluation of the following modifications:
- Changing the volume of beverage containers,
- Adjusting beverage container materials, and
- Replacing a portion of the distribution network with rail transportation instead of road transportation.
Based upon the success of the initial engagement, our client requested assessments on additional products.
