Case study - Convincing in all aspects

Erwin Nijssen from Grashoek in The Netherlands has been a poultry farmer all his life. Virtually, he has been working with poultry ever since he started walking. Truly a very skilled poultry farmer, who knows the industry inside out. The in-depth knowledge has made him capable of expanding his business in a highly competitive market. Today, Erwin Nijssen has five houses.

- All five houses lie side by side so in principle the production figures should be identical when looking at a two year production cycle. But they are not, Erwin Nijssen says.

Significantly different data

Erwin was puzzled about the performance in his newly built poultry shed, where he installed a DACS ventilation system.

- The DACS system is quite different in functionality from the other systems, and I am convinced this is the reason why I see significantly different data from this house. Feeding and watering systems are identical in all five houses, so what other than the ventilation system could it be?

Lower heating costs

The first four houses are very similar when looking at the production figures. In the DACS house the FCR has always been better. Not just the first 2-3 crops, but every single crop since Erwin Nijssen started production in this shed in 2007. The weight of the birds from the DACS shed is always significantly higher (+100 grams at day 41), and this shed has delivered the best production figures ever.

- In addition to this, the heating costs are much lower in the DACS house than in the other four houses, Erwin Nijssen says.

To support the statement, Erwin Nijssen shows data from a winter crop in 2011. These data show the heating costs for each of the five houses. Naturally, the difference in the summer is less, but still there are significant savings on heating to be made throughout the year.

Dry litter

The savings in heating have to do with the functionality of the ventilation system from DACS. “The law of physics still rules and since warm air is lighter than cold air, the warmest air accumulates under the roof”. This warm air is what the DACS system brings down to the birds. To this the constant movement of air in the bird zone keeps the litter dry and brings oxygen enriched air to the birds.

- I am convinced that the functionality of the system is what keeps the litter in optimum condition and what makes the better overall performance in this particular house. No doubt about that, Erwin Nijssen says.

Less antibiotics needed

An extremely promising add-on to the better overall performance is that the birds in the shed with the DACS ventilation need less antibiotics than the birds in the four other sheds. A comparison made by the veterinarian shows a 40 % reduction in antibiotic treatments in the DACS-ventilated shed compared to the other four sheds in 2010, and a 55 % reduction in 2011.

Significant savings

- The easiest money I make compared to my colleagues is the significant savings per crop. In the DACS house the savings are significant and the production figures in top. What more can one ask for!
