When confronted with the vast expanse of concrete building bases and the shale tip of the long-abandoned coal mine at Tilmanstone in East Kent, Tom La Dell Landscape Architects realised that the topsoil needed for the regeneration of the site had to be created on site. Compost was the only practical and sustainable source of organic matter to mix with the shale to form this 'topsoil'.
