Composting of municipal waste in Poland
Composting constitute an important element of the integrated systems of municipal waste management, which is being developed these days. In such systems, the process is employed mainly in the treatment of selectively collected biologically degradable moist waste coming from kitchens, gardening and municipal green places. The biological treatment of mixed municipal waste, however, is employed mainly in order to decompose organic components of the waste before it is disposed to a landfill. This process called the mechanical-biological treatment of waste is, to some extent, the alternative to the thermal treatment of mixed municipal waste (remaining after a selective collection of recyclable materials and biologically decomposable fractions). In Poland, almost exclusively not sorted, mixed municipal waste is composted and the obtained compost is of low quality.
