Formatank Ltd, UK specialists in GRP tank lining solutions, has successfully refurbished two 20 year old steel storage tanks at First Milk’s Aspatria facility in rural Cumbria, one of the UK’s largest cheese creameries. These works are part of a major sustainability project to produce bio-methane and will be the first dairy processing site in Europe to feed into the gas grid. Formatank were appointed by Clearfleau, a leading AD provider for the food and beverage sector who have been commissioned to design, build and operate the facility, to repair and refurbish the two 208m3 whey and diary waste storage tanks.

Once the tanks have been drained a thorough cleaning process is carried out to remove the debris and derogation built up over the years. Formatank conducts an in depth assessment of the existing tanks including ultrasonic tests of the tank wall thickness which is crucial to determine the application method of the GRP 2-coat coating system. Barry Vietch, Managing Director at Formatank comments ‘the steel was in remarkably good condition considering the nature of the product being stored; however larger areas above the waterline were heavily corroded.” A spray deposit technique was used to apply the 2-coat system to the tank walls and roof to a thickness of 3mm. Formatank’s cost effective solution delivers major CAPEX savings compared to the cost of replacing the tanks and has extended the asset life of the tanks for a further 10 years.

To further enhance the products and services available with Formatank, an Insurance Back Guarantee is available for 10-20 years for all work carried out.
