THE PROBLEM
Increased development in central and south Florida has altered the natural drainage pattern of the Florida Everglades National Park (Everglades). This alteration has resulted in excess water during the wet season and insufficient water flowing through the ecosystem during the dry season, increased water supply demands, degrading water quality, and declining estuary health and wading bird populations. To address these concerns, the South Florida Water Management District (District) decided to implement the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir A-1 Project in 2003, as part of the ACCELER8 program. ACCELER8 is a District initiative developed to expedite the implementation of eight key restoration projects within the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). ACCELER8 reaffirms the commitment of the federal/state/local partnership to revitalize the Everglades ecosystem.
