Application: Analysis of Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs)
CEFAS has monitored the impact of novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs), the poly brominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in marine mamals such as harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena). There are concerns regarding the presistence, toxicity and the ability to bioaccumulate of these BFRs. There are a range of these novel BFRs (NBFRs) reported to be in use and CEFAS has been monitoring these substances in marine ecosystems.
Equipment: SpeedExtractor E-916 and Syncore Analyst
The BUCHI SpeedExtractor in combination with the Syncore Analyst provides an integrated solution that meets their requirements. Multiple sample extraction ensures speed and delivers accurate results. Solvent consumption is much lower than the other classical methods used. Syncore Analyst in conjunction with SpeedExtractor delivers a parallel process workflow of a batch of six samples.

CEFAS chose a SpeedExtractor because pressurised liquid extraction is an exhaustive and quick alternative to Soxhlet. They prefer the SpeedExtractor when compared with other pressurised solvent extraction instrumentation as the SpeedExtractor was quicker allowing 6 simultaneous extractions. It holds and seals cells automatically and so avoids leaks and costly consumables. There is reduced downtime from blockages as each cell position is separate. A multi-place Syncore Analyst evaporator increases convenience as the SpeedExtractor collection bottles are directly compatible.
