Fact sheet about brominated flame retardants
NILU has developed methods for analysis and undertakes several projects to structure the knowledge on Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in the environment.
The fact sheet (2/2003 E) looks on BFRs in general and look specially on several projects NILU undertakes to achieve more knowledge about the problem.
Screening of the levels of Penta-BDEs in Norwegian lakes revealed that fish from Norway`s largest lake, Mjøsa, have very high levels of compounds compared to other lakes in Southern Norway. These findings indicate that lake Mjøsa is exposed to local sources of pollution.
NILU has several on-going projects to strengthen the national competence concerning sources, spread, exposure and toxic effects of environmental contaminants such as the BFRs.
