From the Executive Director: Community, Respect for Nature Crucial to Successful Farming, Author Says
What book is on your nightstand? I just started “Wildly Successful Farming: Sustainability and the New Agricultural Land Ethic,” by Brian DeVore, who was the guest speaker as SFA Central Chapter held its annual meeting this past Saturday in Little Falls.
At the meeting, Brian shared snippets featuring area farmers who prioritize soil health and sustainable farming practices. You may know Brian as the Land Stewardship Project’s editor and communications coordinator, and you would likely recognize some of the farm families featured in his book. Brian picked stories that demonstrate diversity in food and fiber production and how important farmers’ embracing of the natural world is to success.
Working with nature is a repeated theme in his book, which is more about hope and the future than simply the ups and downs of weather, markets and everyday farm challenges. Brian also affirmed the value of groups like SFA Central Chapter coming together on a cold winter morning to work on our food system in a way that builds community.
It helped that we were all warm inside Sprout Marketplace and had enjoyed a hot breakfast of locally grown food. As the days grow longer but winter continues, give his book a read. Order it through SFA’s Amazon Smile page or from University of Wisconsin Press.
More chapter annual meetings are upcoming: Western and Crow River March 16 and Driftless on March 23. Don’t miss a chance to gather with your neighbors, build community, share food and work together to shift the food and agriculture production paradigm.
