Mixed organic waste composting using rotary drum composter
A combination of vegetable waste, cattle manure and saw dust was utilised for high rate composting in a household rotary drum composter. It was found that temperature remained above 55?C for a period of two days, Faecal Coliforms and Faecal Streptococci decrease from 7.5 ? 108 to 5 ? 102 and 1.5 ? 107 to 5 ? 103 bacteria/g, respectively. Negligible VFAs production indicated full aerobic ...

Improved performance of red worms (Eisenia andrei) in compost of cattle manure rinsed with water
To achieve satisfactory results with vermiculture, it is important to know how many times to rinse cattle manure to eliminate salts. Treatments under evaluation were 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 rinses in a tap water: manure ratio of 1 : 1 (v/v). Electrical Conductivity (EC), Biomass of Worms (BW) and Number of Cocoons (NC) were evaluated. The EC ranged from 2.57 to 0.5 dS·m−1 for T0 and T4. ...

Rotary drum composting of different organic waste mixtures
The effects of three different mixtures of organic waste on composting in a rotary drum were examined by measuring changes in physico-chemical and biological parameters. It was observed that the time courses of the three mixtures: run A (grass cuttings, vegetable waste and food waste), run B (cattle manure, vegetable waste and sawdust) and run C (cattle manure, food waste, vegetable waste, paper ...

Statistical modelling of the impact of some polyphenols on the efficiency of anaerobic digestion and the co-digestion of the wine distillery wastewater with dairy cattle manure and cheese whey
The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of anaerobic digestion in the treatment of polyphenols (PP) present in olive mill wastewater (OMW) and wine distillery wastewater (WDW). Anaerobic Toxicity Assay (ATA) was conducted to assess the impact of the most representative phenolic compounds present in OMW and WDW: catechol, tannins and p-Coumaric acid, on biogas production. ...

Stimulation of the hydrolytic stage for biogas production from cattle manure in an electrochemical bioreactor
Electrical current in the hydrolytic phase of the biogas process might affect biogas yield. In this study, four 1,150 mL single membrane-less chamber electrochemical bioreactors, containing two parallel titanium plates were connected to the electrical source with voltages of 0, −0.5, −1 and −1.5 V, respectively. Reactor 1 with 0 V was considered as a control reactor. The trend of biogas ...

Nitrogen losses from dairy manure estimated through nitrogen mass balance and chemical markers
Received for publication February 13, 2009. Ammonia is an important air and water pollutant, but the spatial variation in its concentrations presents technical difficulties in accurate determination of ammonia emissions from animal feeding operations. The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between ammonia volatilization and 15N of dairy manure and the feasibility of ...

Removal of 2-methylisoborneol from aqueous solution by cattle manure compost (CMC) derived activated carbons
The objective of this study is the synthesis of activated carbon derived from cattle manure compost (CMC) causing environmental problems using zinc chloride (ZnCl2) activation and to examine the suitability and performance of the prepared activated carbon (PAC) in removing 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) from aqueous solution. The influence of ZnCl2/CMC ratios and outgassing from the PACs on the ...

Sulphur mineralization kinetics of cattle manure and green waste compost in soils
Sulphur mineralization of cattle manure (CM) and green waste compost (GWC) added to six agricultural soils with different chemical properties was monitored over 10 weeks in a laboratory incubation experiment. Although the amount of sulphur was higher in CM than in GWC, the cumulative SO4 2--S values in GWC-treated soils were higher than in soil amended with CM. The percentages of mineralized S ...
