Primary energy needs and greenhouse effect increase: what can be done?
Primary energy needs are estimated to grow by a factor of 2.3 from now to 2050. At the same time, the necessary reduction of CO2emissions may lead to a drastic cut in the use of fossil fuels. To avoid an energy shortage, a very large share of energy production has to be met by renewable energies or nuclear energy. These two kinds of energy have specific environmental impacts and constraints which ...

Potential of crop residue in India as a source of energy
Here is given an estimate of crop residue production and different recycling options as a source of renewable energy. India produces 388 Tg crop residues but only 182 Tg equivalent to 2818 PJ is usable. Recycling as manure can replace 15% of 595 PJ national fertiliser energy. Recycling in digester can produce 20.32 billion m? biogas. It can be converted into 182 Tg of biocoal generating 156?258.3 ...

River Dommel (NL) - Case Study
In the spring of 2016 the construction of a new hydropower plant in the Dommel river near Sint-Michielsgestel started. The existing dam in the river is equipped with a Landustrie hydropower screw and will generate renewable energy for approximately 200 households. The Dommelstroom project is the first cooperative hydropower power plant in the Netherlands, initiated by Bram and Jan Taks, father ...

The impact of subsidies on efficiency and production: empirical test of forestry in Japan
This study evaluates efficiency of forest management in Japan. Our results show that efficiency of forest management decreases over 25 years period from 1975 to 2000 on an average. The study indicates a substantial variation in efficiency across prefectures with a potential for output saving in the range of 40% on an average. Our econometric results seem to support the hypothesis that government ...

Environmental policies for agriculture in Europe
This study analyses the environmental policies in Europe and particularly in The Netherlands. Comprehensive analysis of their policy package, which includes environmental taxes, tax exemptions, and the voluntary environmental agreement are provided. Each method does seem to show significant effects to reduce the environmental bads. This paper also presents an economic analysis of the glasshouse ...

Energy and exergy audit of a solar grain dryer
Energy and exergy audit of a solar grain dryer has been presented in this paper. The solar grain dryer is made up of a flat-plate solar collector and a convective drying chamber. The properties of the working fluid were measured at various energy input levels. Energy and exergy balance equations were written for the flat-plate solar collector, the convective drying chamber and the solar grain ...

Exergy landscapes: exploration of second-law thinking towards sustainable landscape design
Depletion of fossil fuels and climate change necessitate a transition to sustainable energy systems that make efficient use of renewable energy sources. Recently, the disciplines of building engineering, architecture and urban planning have begun embracing 'second-law thinking' to reduce energy consumption in the built environment. Second-law thinking, however, is not yet a part of spatial ...

Eucalyptus plantations for electricity generation: the cost of carbon dioxide abatement in Thailand
Short-rotation plantations are expected to play an important role in the transition towards renewable energy, in particular in many developing countries. At present, developing countries do not have any carbon dioxide (CO2 ) abatement targets under the Kyoto Protocol, but CO2 mitigating projects might nevertheless be carried out through the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The purpose of this ...

Optimisation of renewable forest fuel supply for more sustainable energy production of CHP plant in Finland
In this study, a potential fuel procurement planning model to sustainable energy production problems is considered. In Finland peat is commonly used as a fuel of energy plants. However, it is recently considered as non-renewable fuel. Therefore, we tested the model using Finnish Government’s peat fuel tax policy decisions for sustainable energy production. However, due to the complex nature ...
