Know More about Galvalume Steel: Material, Application
When it comes to galvalume steel, some people just think that it is an important alloy material often used in steel and metal industry. In addition to that, is there any more understanding of this material? For example: How is it made? Who create it? What advantages and disadvantages does it have? Where can it be or not be used? How long does it last? Reading this article to know more information about it now.
What Is Galvalume Steel?
Generally, galvalume steel is an Al-Zn alloy, which uses cold-rolled steel sheets as substrates and then solidifies 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicone at a high temperature of 600 ° C. This unique “aluminum-iron-silicon-zinc” structure combines the physical protection and high durability of aluminium with the electrochemical protection property of zinc. Therefore, GL steel is more resistant and outlasts the traditional galvanized steel. That’s why it’s become one of the most popular materials in today’s steel market.
Advantages of GL Steel
1. Strong Corrosion Resistance
The GL steel is more resistant than GI steel due to the double protection of zinc and aluminum. That is, when the zinc is worn away, the aluminium will form a dense layer of aluminum oxide, preventing corrosive substances from further corroding the steel interior. This also means it has a “self-healing” ability.
2. Attractive Appearance
Galvalume often has a gorgeous finish with silvery-white color and smooth surface. And there are many delicate “zinc flowers” that are highly appreciated when used as a building material.
3. Heat Resistance
This aluminum-zinc alloy steel has a good heat resistance and can withstand high temperatures of more than 300 °C. On the other hand, its thermal reflectivity is also very high, twice that of galvanized iron sheets, thus it is often used as a thermal insulation material.
4. Great Paintability and Processability
Due to the good adhesion between galvalume steel coating and paintings, it can be painted directly without any pretreatment and weathering. Besides, like hot-dipped galvanized steel, it has good workability and weldability, which can be processed cold bending, stamping, etc., without doing damage to steel surface.
5. Long Service Life
Tests conducted under the same outdoor conditions show that the service life of galvalume steel is more than two times that of galvanized steel.
Where Should Galvalume Steel Not be Used?
Here are some circumstances where galvalume steel should not be used:
1. Alkaline environments. The aluminum in galvalume steel does not hold up well to that type of environment, so galvanized steel may be a better choice in that instance.
2. Coastal environments. Specifically, a large amount of salt (sodium chloride) in coastal environment will harm the galvalume coating and prematurely degrade the steel.
3. Animal farms. Over time, the ammonia gas released from animal urine can break down the steel coating and leads to the degradation of the metal.
Where Can You Get It?
