Multi-Site veterinary diagnostic laboratory uses Matrix Gemini LIMS for Seamless sample management case study
The Matrix Gemini Laboratory Information System (LIMS) from Autoscribe Informatics has been used to co-ordinate sample tracking, management and reporting across four different locations for a busy veterinary diagnostic and clinical pathology laboratory.
Background
Nationwide Laboratory Services Is a UKAS accredited independent multi-disciplinary veterinary laboratory providing diagnostic and clinical pathology services for veterinary surgeons throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. The laboratory offers over 1100 test options across the full range of clinical pathology disciplines, including: biochemistry, hematology, microbiology, endocrinology, immunology, molecular biology, histology, cytology, serology, semen analysis, post mortem and allergy testing. The company operates laboratories in Poulton, Leeds and Swanscombe in addition to a specialist veterinary endocrinology center in Cambridge.
Challenges
The company had separate LIMS operating at each site with no intercommunication, so it was essential to be able to run a single system that operated across all sites. In addition, remote access to test results was important as some of the veterinary specialists work from home. Since some of the sites offer more specialist testing samples may need to be divided and sent to more than one site for testing. Under these circumstances, it is important to monitor the allocation of resources across different sites without the need for re-registration. Other key requirements were that the system needed to be user-configurable. This was important because the system needed to be set up to emulate the existing process and to provide the flexibility to adapt the system in future.
