Online tool highlights the scale of work-related accidents in Brazil
In Brazil, an occupational health & safety accident happens every 47 seconds. 3.3 million notifications of work-related accidents were registered with the authorities in the period between 2012 and 2016. 12,423 deaths due to work-related accidents were reported in the country in that same period of time.
This data is based on the analysis produced by the Digital Observatory of Health and Safety at Work (Observatório Digital de Saúde e Segurança do Trabalho), which is an online tool that provides, in real time, data on occupational health issues in Brazil.
- The data available in the Digital Observatory of Health and Safety at Work comes from different sources, including information from, among others:
- the General Registry of Employed and Unemployed Workers (Cadastro Geral de Empregados e Desempregados - CAGED) and the Annual Report of Social Information (Relação Anual de Informações Sociais - RAIS), both from the Ministry of Labor (Ministério do Trabalho – MT),
- the social and demographic provided by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística - IBGE); and
the economic statistics provided by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada - IPEA).
The Digital Observatory of Health and Safety at Work, on a wide geographical scale, data on the number of notifications of work-related accidents, the amount of social security benefits granted and expended due to occupational & safety issues, and the number of working days lost due to work-related accidents, among other things.
The website was created by the Labor Public Prosecutors' Office (Ministério Público do Trabalho – MPT) in partnership with the International Labor Organization (Organização Internacional do Trabalho - OIT) and developed by the SMARTLAB Team of the MPT and OIT in collaboration with the Faculty of Public Health of São Paulo University (Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo - USP).
The main objectives of the tool are to:
- encourage transparency and public access to occupational-health and safety-related information;
- contribute to the improvement of the strategies to minimize occupational health issues in workplaces;
- create awareness of the consequences of irregularities in the workplace; and
- provide quality information for the prevention of occupational health accidents.
The tool also makes available a filter that allows details searches across the entire country, such as when a particular occupational health and safety incident occurred (starting from 2012 until today), and where it occurred (It covers all the States of Brazil and their main municipalities).
Moreover, it is possible to search for a precise diagnosis of the characteristics of the injury, such as the parts of the body affected, the cause, where a certain accident took place.
All the data is provided in Portuguese, and all information regarding the companies and injured employees is kept confidential.
The first version of the tool was launched on 27 April 2017, to coincide with the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. After that, an updated version was released on 15 September 2017. There are also other versions foreseen for 15 February 2018 and 28 April 2018 with information from the first half of the year and updated findings.
The goal of the tool is to encourage the implementation of measures to secure the health and safety of workers, such as the execution of effective preventive public policies by the Government within the regions and economic sectors of greater incidence or prevalence of specific patterns of accidents or illness.
Also, the unprecedented number of accidents provided by the Digital Observatory of Health and Safety at Work highlight the importance of compliance with occupational health and safety rules by the companies and the caution in relation to the prevention of work-related accidents in their daily activities.
