Organic livestock: why you should embrace it
The term “organic” is widely used nowadays, usually to refer to products and practices related to a healthier and more conscious lifestyle. But what about organic livestock? Learn more about the practice, its benefits and why you should start embracing it as your main production system.
What is organic livestock?
Organic livestock is a practice that consists on producing healthy food of the highest quality through the optimal and rational use of resources. It requires putting the environment and animal welfare as a priority and rejecting the use of harmful chemical substances.
This production method does not conceive growing animals without them being able to develop in open spaces in which they can perform all their functions in a natural way. In this sense, it is important to emphasize that for livestock to be considered organic, it is required that both the animals and the agricultural area to which they are associated (any meadows and grasslands from which they will feed) comply with certain standards and regulations that will grant them the certification.
What’s the point of organic livestock?
The main goal of organic livestock practices is to achieve animal-origin products of the greatest quality and high nutritional value, while promoting a more humane way to treat farm animals; just because they will end up as food on the table doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve to be treated ethically and responsibly.
It’s clear that embracing alternative farming practices such as organic livestock production has its challenges, but the rewards can be well worth it. Besides reducing the toll to the environment, it can also be an opportunity to commercialize higher quality products that will also command higher prices. Being environmentally conscious and getting paid more for your produce doesn’t sound bad at all, does it?
