Metal distribution in tissues of free‐range chickens near a lead–zinc mine in Kabwe, Zambia
Concentrations of Pb, Cd, and other metals in tissues of 17 free‐range and 32 commercial broiler chickens from the Kabwe mining town in Zambia were determined. Mean concentrations of Pb and Cd exceeded maximum levels for human consumption in some organs including muscle (Pb only) in free‐range chickens, in contrast to low levels in broiler chickens. Human consumers in Kabwe could be exposed to ...

The relative sensitivity of macrophyte and algal species to herbicides and fungicides: An analysis using species sensitivity distributions
Lemna spp. are the standard test species representing aquatic macrophytes in the current risk assessment schemes for herbicides and plant growth regulators in the European Union and North America. At a Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) workshop on Aquatic Macrophyte Risk Assessment for Pesticides (AMRAP), a Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD) working group was formed ...

Accumulation of dietary methylmercury and effects on growth and survival in two estuarine forage fish: Cyprinodon variegatus and Menidia beryllina
Dietary methylmercury (MeHg) uptake by fish in relation to life stage, species, and level of exposure is poorly understood in lower trophic levels, particularly in estuarine species. The authors compared accumulation of dietary MeHg as well as sensitivity (survival and growth) to dietary MeHg exposure in two species of estuarine forage fish, Cyprinodon variegatus and Menidia beryllina. Fish ...

The diffusion of environmental technologies: the case of the Turkish fertiliser industry
This paper aims to analyse the diffusion of environmental technologies. By studying the Turkish fertiliser industry as a case, we exemplify how a system is built around environmental technology applications and what factors are active in its diffusion. Our results show that regulations and public pressures are the main determinants in the diffusion of environmental technologies, indicating the ...

Global convergence meets local divergence: intellectual property in Indian seed markets
International organisations advocate global convergence in intellectual property as a prerequisite for successful innovation strategies. The difficulties of achieving such harmonisation are, however, evident from the attempts of several nations to develop divergent intellectual property systems. This paper explores the causes of institutional divergence and uses intellectual property for seed ...

Root and foliar uptake, translocation and distribution of [14C]fluoranthene in pea plants
Uptake of 14C‐labelled fluoranthene ([14C]FLT) via both roots and leaves of Pisum sativum seedlings and distribution of [14C] in plants by both acropetal and basipetal transport was evaluated. The highest [14C] level was found in root base (≈270 × 104 dpm/g dw) and the lowest level in the stem apex (<2 × 104 dpm/g dw) after just 2 hours of root exposure. For foliar uptake, the highest level of ...

A Latin American global player goes to Asia: Embraer in China
Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer has transformed itself since privatisation in 1992 to become a world market leader in a high-tech industry traditionally dominated by companies based in OECD countries. In recent years Embraer has also become an aggressive foreign investor – in particular by launching a joint venture in China in 2002. This paper analyses the record so far, considering the ...

Selenium tissue burden compartmentalization in resident white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) of the san francisco bay delta estuary
High selenium (Se) loads into the San Francisco Bay‐Delta (SFBD) are bioaccumulated and biomagnified in food webs and can impair reproduction of resident oviparous animals such as white sturgeon. The objective of this study was to determine Se tissue burden in SFBD resident white sturgeon to assess Se bioaccumulation in different organs, including ovaries and liver where egg yolk precursor ...

Nature and humans, together again
Humans have been “framed out of the picture” when it comes to documenting nature, says Conservation International executive vice president and senior scientist M. Sanjayan in the opening of a new series, “EARTH A New Wild,” which premiers Feb. 4 on PBS. Sanjayan and producer David Allen — “probably the finest natural history filmmaker out there today,” ...

Evaluation of the short term 12 hour toxicity of 3‐trifluoromethyl‐4‐nitrophenol (TFM) to multiple life stages of Venustaconcha ellipsiformis and Epioblasma triquetra and its host fish (Percina caprodes)
This study evaluated the risk of 12‐h exposures of the lampricide 3‐trifluoromethyl‐4‐nitrophenol (TFM) to multiple life stages of the federally endangered snuffbox (Epioblasma triquetra) and its primary host fish the common logperch (Percina caprodes) as well as a surrogate to the snuffbox, the ellipse (Venustaconcha ellipsiformis). Life stages examined included free glochidia, 1‐wk ...

Batch versus column modes for the adsorption of radioactive metal onto rice husk waste: conditions optimization through response surface methodology
Batch and column adsorption modes were compared for the adsorption of U(VI) ions using rice husk waste biomass (RHWB). Response surface methodology was employed for the optimization of process variables, i.e., (pH (A), adsorbent dose (B), initial ion concentration (C)) in batch mode. The B, C and C2 affected the U(VI) adsorption significantly in batch mode. The developed quadratic model was ...

Extreme grinder debuts at new Farewell Bend fish cleaning station - Case Study
Why does a state park need a fish grinder with this power? Because Brownlee Reservoir catfish have thick, tough skin and large bones. That created a nightmare maintenance problem for the old grinder. It worked on the same principle as a garbage disposal: spinning blades that would bind, bend and break. This grinder has teeth that mesh, a better design for heavy-duty grinding and a low-maintenance ...

The value of Accountability
As farmers ourselves, we appreciate accountability. We know farmers have a lot going on, especially during planting season. When there’s an issue, you don’t have time to call your seed treater manufacturer, your seed treatment provider and your dealer. And you certainly don’t have time to entertain the finger pointing that goes on between them all. Designing a fast and ...
