Sea lice control using LG Sonic ultrasound technology
In May 2017, a Consortium, coordinated by LG Sonic, started the LiceSonic research project in order to develop a smart and environmentally friendly method to control sea lice in open finfish production. The research project has now advanced to finalizing integration between the monitoring software and hardware.
In May 2017, a Consortium, coordinated by LG Sonic, started the LiceSonic research project. The goal of the project is to develop an environmentally friendly solution for sea lice control. The project has now advanced in to the software and hard integration phase.
Developing a smart sea lice solution
Right now, LG Sonic is working together with Control Data Systems (CDS) to integrate communication between the monitoring software and the hardware in order to control sea lice. The prototype for the data communication and visualization model has been designed and is now being integrated with the LG Sonic ultrasound technology. LG Sonic ultrasound technology uses specific low power ultrasonic sound waves, which are harmless to fish and other aquatic life, but effectively control algal blooms in large water surfaces.
Need for a new approach towards sea lice
The objective of this research project is to develop an environmentally friendly solution for monitoring and controlling sea lice in fish farms. Sea lice has caused severe damage in the past to salmon farms in Norway and Scotland, resulting in a worldwide supply decline. With increasing restrictions on bio-active treatment methods, which are currently often used to control sea lice, the need for a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution grows. Furthermore, recent reports suggest that bio-active treatments have become less effective as sea lice have developed a resistance to them.
LG Sonic R&D
LiceSonic is a Eurostars project coordinated by LG Sonic. Eurostars is co-funded by Eureka Member Countries and the European Union Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. The project officially on 1 May 2017 and will take 30 months. Previously, LG Sonic coordinated and participated in several European Funded (FP7) projects, such as Clearwater-PMPC, DRONIC, CHEM-FREE (FP6), and FISH-CWUS (EUREK).
