Urban greenery and its sustainable extension strategies in hot arid region of India
More than one-third of world's population lives in arid and semiarid regions. These regions of developing countries face several constraints in establishment of urban greenery. About two-third of the geographical area of India falls under dry land category. Efforts undertaken by the Arid Forest Research Institute, Jodhpur, India for developing arid urban greenery models have been presented in this paper. Reasons for degradation of urban greenery and strategies for successful implementation of urban afforestation programmes in the region have also been discussed. Certain better performing tree species have been recommended as shade and avenue species in Indian sub-continent urban arid conditions.
