What is `Learn About Composting Day`?
Taking place annually on 29th May, ‘Learn About Composting Day’ is all about getting to know how food waste can be converted into a valuable soil improver – and it’s a day, and purpose, very close to our hearts, here at Tidy Planet!
Rocket Composters for Commercial-Scale Food Waste
For anyone that knows us, you’ve likely come across our range of internationally renowned Rocket Composter machines - which are helping organisations across the globe to harness their food waste and other organic wastage as a resource.
These on-site in-vessel composting systems are our pride and joy - and we first started manufacturing them over 20 years ago.
Today, we have over 1,000 machines in operation worldwide – helping communities, luxury hotels, colleges, universities, oil field canteens, prisons, and many more to close the food waste loop. This not only enables companies to reduce their dependency on off-site disposal methods - reducing costs and carbon footprint - but it helps to foster a more circular economy.
What are the Benefits of Industrial Composting?
While we love to bang the drum about how great composting is, we know that it’s only when you get to grips with the benefits that it can offer that you’ll start getting excited too.
For many businesses, employing an on-site food waste composting model is all about driving sustainability forward. They may wish to decrease their annual carbon emissions – while also reducing their transportation costs – or they may have a horticultural need for compost within their own grounds and gardens.
From AstraZeneca and Raymond Blanc’s Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, to City of Glasgow College and international oil and gas firms, each site we deal with has its own individual sustainability goals – and composting can help to achieve them.
A few - among the many - advantages of composting include:
- Diverting vast volumes of food waste away from being landfilled
- Saving thousands of pounds in off-site disposal costs
- Reducing greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere
- Decreasing pollution levels via less waste transportation trucks on the road
- Creating jobs when deployed on a community-collection-project scale
- Rejuvenating the structure and quality of soil for healthy plant and produce growth
- Replacing chemical fertilizers and preventing toxins from entering our groundwater
- Promoting a circular, resourceful mindset
What Makes ‘Good’ Compost?
Despite the rumours or what you may have read, there’s no such thing as ‘overnight compost’.
We often liken the composting process to baking bread – there’s a delicate recipe to follow, and if you get the measurements or timing wrong, the end-result won’t be the high-quality, nutritious ‘loaf’ you’re after.
It’s true that good things come to those who wait – and our Rocket Composters create compost in just 14 days.
To achieve a high-quality output, a combination of wet food waste and dried woodchip are fed into the machine, where the internal blades mix and aerate the material inside an enclosed and warm environment – a perfect place for healthy composting to thrive.
Tidy Planet’s Commitment to Composting
With over a fifth of a century’s experience within the organic waste management arena, our team is not only knowledgeable in the science behind the composting process, but we practise what we preach – with many of our crew being seasoned composters and produce growers themselves.
We love visiting our clients’ sites to see their composting systems in operation, but we also enjoy delivering regular workshops about this wonderful resource – sharing our top tips for baking that nutritious ‘loaf’ and supporting businesses along their journey.
