Activated Sludge Technology Book
A Brief History of the Activated Sludge Process
Although recorded history and surviving archaeological sites show that the Babylonians and Assyrians, and later the Romans all used quite sophisticated technology to collect and dispose of their wastes, this environmental awareness was not adopted by later societies, until the Industrial Revolution in Britain in the 19th century forced political intervention. Poor quality, densely packed housing with no provision for proper sewage disposal led to overbearing odor problems, polluted river systems and inevitably epidemics of fatal diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria of fecal origin like Vibrio cholerae and Salmonella spp. dispersed by them.
Eventually authorities were forced to take action and after several royal commissions, the Rivers Pollution Prevention Act became law in 1876. In fact this act was fairly ineffectual, and achieved little except that it led to another Royal Commission on Sewage Disposal in 1898.

Application/Industries Served
Software for Treatment, Optimization and Design of Activated Sludge wastewater treatment plants
Activated sludge systems capable of carbon oxidation, nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal are complex. The implications of efficient nitrogen and enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) on plant design and operation are significant.
SASSPro V2 provides a highly productive environment for investigating activated
sludge processes ranging from single stage aerobic systems, to complex processes incorporating nitrogen and enhanced phosphorus removal.
