Bradan Limited was formed in 2001 by a group of individuals from different backgrounds and skills but with the common concern that the inexorable spread of fish pathogens across the world was not being properly controlled by use of outmoded, unsafe and environmentally undesirable disinfection methods and that the interests of the fish and the stresses on them were not being considered. Bradan`s research and technology has already contributed significantly to the improvement of biosecurity and fish health internationally and it provides advisory services in all aspects of aquatic bio-security systems including set-up, training and certification, veterinary audit and insurance adjustment.
Bradan is a unique science based company run by Scientists. It markets its own technology and that of its collaborating universities and international partner companies at best possible prices through its dedicated website.
Based on the Kintyre peninsula, in the heart of Scotland's fish farming area and some of the most beautiful scenery in Europe, the company is anything but a rural outpost of high ideals. Bradan's Chairman is Emeritus Professor at both the University of Stirling in Scotland and at the University of Idaho in the heart of the American trout, salmon, tilapia and aquarium fish industries. The company works closely with scientists and research facilities throughout the world and through this association has built an enviable range of products based on its own research and on collaboration with leading manufacturers, scientists and fish producers, in the UK, USA, France, Japan, Canada, Chile and Malta.
Led by a senior pathologist and supported by a number of medical and scientific colleagues, our principal areas of research interest are:
- Animal disease control through advanced biosecurity.
- Safe disinfection in the aquatic environment.
- Stress management in man and animals through our advanced heat shock protein technology
Bradan’s various disinfection products, developed by our scientists in association with Antec Ltd (now DuPont) are internationally recognised as providing the best means of controlling both serious animal diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease and Equine Influenza, notifiable fish pathogens such as ISA and furunculosis and those germs such as Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria which come from animals, fish and shellfish but can cause serious illness in humans.
Virkon Aquatic, Bradan’s flagship product was developed by our scientists for specifically aquatic use. It is available in a variety of formulations for different purposes. It has the highest rating against all aquatic pathogens and yet, when properly applied, is safe for use with food for Listeria control, and in fishery and fish farm conditions, even when live fish are present. Read more about Virkon Aquatic.
Virkon S the original agricultural disinfectant (WHICH MUST NOT BE USED IN PRESENCE OF FISH OR FOODSTUFFS) is the most widely used independently tested agricultural disinfectant and is the only one directly specified for use in certain notifiable diseases. Read more about Virkon S.
Heat Shock Protein technology arose from the interest of Bradan scientists in utilizing the remarkable abilities of Tex-OE®. This is a patented extract of the prickly pear cactus, originally devised for use by professional scuba divers. Using Protex®, Bradan’s special formulation of this material, we have developed, through extensive scientific studies, that it safely enhances Heat Shock Protein (HSP) levels in humans and in animals. Bradan products incorporating this technology are now available widely used by humans for prevention of jet lag and exercise fatigue and in animal and fish transport and disease stress recovery.
