Historically, net cleaning was a reactive measure. Net maintenance was often left until the fouling community had grown enough to be considered problematic.
Current standard net washing procedures involve removing a fouled net and replacing it with a clean one. Substantial equipment, expense, manpower and time are involved in this process. Feeding time is often lost and fish are stressed due to handling. The fouled net is sent to a land-based facility for washing in huge drums. Drum washing is the most significant factor contributing to net degradation. Once the net has been through the “wringer”, it must be untangled, feathered out, repaired of incidental tearing and other damage and inspected.
In an effort to minimize net handling, it has become the industry standard to incorporate the use of an active copper compounds to delay organic accumulation. This ionic release by its chemical properties leaches, creating a less favorable environment for settling organisms. While this “paint” impregnated into the net fibers is considered generally effective, its success depends entirely on site specifics and its ionic release capability. It is a very expensive application and its use is being reconsidered in efforts to maintain the highest standards of environmental sensitivity.
British Columbia salmon producers have a mandate to continually improve environmental stewardship initiatives.
