Calgon Carbon History
When the United States entered World War II, coconut shells were the raw material used to produce granular activated carbon, the filtering agent in military gas masks. Faced with a shortage of this crucial war material, the government asked Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical to develop a substitute from a native material. In 1942, the Company produced an activated carbon product using bituminous coal, and that was the beginning of the firm now known as Calgon Carbon Corporation.
Throughout history, Calgon Carbon has been a pioneer in creating new activated carbon products, systems and services from the infancy stages to the current global industry. The Company currently offers carbon technologies used in over 700 distinct market applications from purifying air and drinking water, to purifying foods and pharmaceuticals, to separating gas and removing mercury emissions from coal-powered electrical facilities. As a leader in the activated carbon industry and with ultraviolet light disinfection and oxidation expertise, Calgon Carbon Corporation has originated cutting-edge purification systems for drinking water, wastewater, odor control, pollution abatement, and a variety of industrial and commercial manufacturing processes.
Over 20 years ago, Calgon Carbon introduced an advanced UV oxidation process to remediate contaminated groundwater. In 1998, we followed that up with the first radical breakthrough in the treatment of drinking water in decades, when our scientists invented a process that could be used to inactivate Cryptosporidium and other similar pathogens in surface water, rendering them harmless to humans. This inventive process placed Calgon Carbon on the leading edge of UV disinfection technology. With the Sentinel® line for drinking water, the C3 Series™ for wastewater, and the Rayox® line for groundwater and process water, Calgon Carbon continues to lead the marketplace with innovative UV technologies.
From the use of granular activated carbon (GAC) for taste and odor removal in the early 1960’s, to the development of ultraviolet light technology for pathogen control in the late 1990’s, to the application of ion exchange technology for removing perchlorates starting in 2000, Calgon Carbon continues to be a pioneer in making water safer and cleaner.
Applications
Industrial Air/Gas Treatment
As the world's leading producer of granular activated carbon, related services and systems for industrial and environmental applications, Calgon Carbon offers a variety of solutions for industrial air and gas treatment. These include carbon adsorption technologies, a broad range of activated, impregnated, and pelletized carbon products, and advanced systems for solvent recovery and VOC removal and destruction.
Carbon Dioxide Treatment: Mercury Removal
Some carbon dioxide streams contain small quantities of mercury. The presence of mercury is a health and safety concern, especially for food-grade carbon dioxide. Calgon Carbon has a proven solution for mercury removal from carbon dioxide.
Carbon Dioxide Treatment: Organics Removal
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a gas widely used in industrial and food applications. It is produced from combustion of carbonaceous fuels, from fermentation operations, and underground wells. Often there are impurities associated with CO2 production that must be removed prior to its use. The presence of organic contaminants can preclude the use of CO2 in a number of applications, but Calgon Carbon has a proven solution for organics removal.
Carbon Dioxide Treatment: Sulfur Compound Removal
Contaminated carbon dioxide (CO2) streams are encountered in industrial processes, such as fermentation off-gases, and as natural CO2 produced from wells. These CO2 streams will typically contain odorous hydrocarbons and sulfur compounds that must be removed in order to make the CO2 suitable for use. Calgon Carbon offers a variety of granular activated carbons and specialty grade impregnated activated carbons to for effective hydrocarbon and sulfur compound removal from gas streams.
Catalyst Protection
Catalysts can be poisoned or fouled by low concentration organic compounds, sulfur or mercury species. Activated carbons, non-impregnated and impregnated types, are typically used as 'guard beds' to protect the catalysts (from fouling and/or deactivation) and the equipment (from corrosion) in streams such as natural gas, acetylene, ethane-propane and ethylene oxide. Calgon Carbon Corporation offers a wide range of activated carbon products suitable for catalyst protection.
Gasoline Vapor Recovery
Due to both regulatory and economic factors, the recovery of evaporated gasoline vapors during physical transfer of gasoline is required at gasoline terminal locations. Calgon Carbon offers a proven technology for gasoline vapor recovery that prevents costly product losses.
Natural Gas Treatment: Removal of Mercury
Many natural gas wellheads contain small quantities of mercury, which cause corrosion in the aluminum cryogenic exchangers used in LNG and LPG plants. In addition, mercury present in hydrocarbon gas streams will reduce the life of many precious metal catalysts. Calgon Carbon has a proven solution for the removal of mercury from natural gas.
Natural Gas Treatment: Removal of Sulfur Compounds
Natural gas feedstocks, for processes such as ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen production, contain sulfur compounds. These compounds can deactivate reforming and shift catalysts, which necessitates expensive catalyst replacement and causes a loss of production. Calgon Carbon has developed specialty impregnated grade activated carbons for the removal of sulfur compounds from inert gas streams, specifically, hydrogen sulfide and low-molecular-weight organic sulfur compounds.
Solvent Recovery
In meeting regulatory standards for the removal of VOC emissions - and new imperatives for waste and cost reduction - efficient solvent recovery systems are a high priority throughout the industrial marketplace. Calgon Carbon offers proven technologies in cost-effective solvent recovery.
