Gradko Environmental are market leaders in the supply and analysis of ambient air monitoring products. Our customers include Environmental Consultants, Government Agencies, Local Authorities, Educational Institutes and Individuals on a worldwide basis. We specialise in providing low cost, easy to use products for air sampling for a wide range of applications.
Passive monitoring technology provides inexpensive long-term air sampling over a large area without the need for capital investment, infrastructure or a power supply. Its simplicity aids its versatility.
Our products are now available for a wide range of pollutants and our research into new equipment or applications is ongoing, with the recent addition of our Rapid Air Monitor for very short-term passive sampling.
Gradko is based in Winchester, UK, providing manufacturing and global distribution of our air monitoring products. Our dedicated laboratory is UKAS accredited (ISO: 17025) and provides accurate and timely analysis of our customers samples.
We were pioneers in the development of passive diffusion tubes in conjunction with the UK Government Department of Trade and Industry. Over the subsequent 18 years our success has been built on providing a progressive, flexible and cost effective service. The technical knowledge acquired during the development phases enable us to provide a comprehensive technical back-up service. This combined with customer driven quality objectives, provides an ongoing path to excellence in all that Gradko Environmental sets out to achieve.
NO2 Monitoring
Nitrogen oxides diffusion tubes provide long-term monitoring options with detection limits in the low parts per billion to parts per million range. These cost effective devices do not require specialist skills or time commitment and therefore give the user an efficient method for air quality monitoring.
Tubes are available for:
- Nitrogen dioxide, (NO2).
- Nitrogen oxides, (Nitric oxide, Nitrogen dioxide and total NOx).
- Simultaneous monitoring of Nitrogen dioxide and Sulphur dioxide (NO2/SO2).
These are Palmes-type diffusion tubes for passive sampling of pollutants over 2-4 weeks. Looking for faster results or shorter monitoring periods?
Sources of Nitrogen oxides:
- Fuel combustion – power stations, off road equipment, vehicles, (in-vehicle concentrations of NO2 may be higher than measured ambient levels).
- Biomass burning.
- Natural processes.
Potential implications of Nitrogen oxides pollution:
- Involved in ground-level Ozone formation.
- Respiratory effects.
- Aggravation of heart disease symptoms.
Volatile Organic Compounds
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the range C2-C28 can be measured using a variety of sorbents to meet the specific applications required by the customer. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can also be measured using a specific sorbent.
VOC emissions into ambient air originate from a variety of sources. These hazardous gases can present health problems and are therefore widely monitored for compliance with air quality guidelines.
Outdoor sources of VOC pollution:
- Vehicles
- Industrial processes (including stack emissions)
- Fossil fuels
- Pesticides
- Tobacco smoke
Indoor sources of VOC pollution:
- Building materials
- Paints and permanent markers
- Adhesives
- Cleaning products and air fresheners, including dry-cleaned clothing
- Refrigerants
- Furnishings
- Photocopiers
- Solvents
- Fuels
- Tobacco smoke
VOCs can be measured from low parts per billion (ppb) to parts per million (ppm) levels using these thermal desorption sorbent tubes. Sampling times start from 1 hour for pumped sampling up to 4 weeks for passive sampling.
VOCs in soil can also be monitored with these tubes in conjunction with soil probes. Soil contamination can occur in proximity to oil refineries, chemical plants, landfill, petrol stations and industrial sites.
Potential implications of VOC pollution:
- Eye, nose and throat irritation
- Nausea and headaches
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Allergic skin reaction
- Involved in ground-level Ozone formation
