Hagan's Saw Service had its beginnings in the basement of the home of James W. Hagan on a farm north of Whitesville, Kentucky in 1957. Mr. Hagan had helped a neighbor cut some wood with lightweight (weight was about 25 lbs.) one-man Homelite chainsaw and decided he would like to have a chainsaw like that. A friend also expressed interest in a one-man chainsaw. So he ordered three saws, one for him, one for his friend and one to sell.
These three saws sold rather quickly, so he ordered three more and sold about eleven saws during the first year. Hagan's Saw Service went on to become one of the largest Homelite chainsaw dealers in the state of Kentucky during the mid and late '60s and moved from the basement to a steel building beside the Hagan's home.
In the early '70s, Homelite began selling its products in the mass and discount markets, and began building cheaper products to compete in those markets. So Hagan's added the STIHL line of chainsaws in order to have a good commercial line of chainsaws and a company that backed them up. The name was also changed to Hagan's Saw Shop to emphasize sales and service.
In the '60s and '70s Hagan's specialized in chainsaw sales and service, and sold a few tillers and riding mowers.
In 1977, Francis Hagan (current owner) bought the business from his father (James W. Hagan) and moved it to a rented 30 x 50ft. building on Hwy 54 in Philpot, Kentucky. During the next few years the Snapper, Echo, Husqvarna and Gilson lines of products were added to Hagan's product offerings, putting Hagan's into the outdoor power equipment business, and the need for more space.
In 1982, Hagan's moved into a new 40 x 80ft. building at its present location. This building was thought to be about twice as big as needed and should accommodate Hagan's for the next 25 years. This would prove to be wrong. In the mid '80s and early '90s Hagan's added the Troy Bilt tiller line, the Wheelhorse line of garden tractors, and Brister's go-karts. This again required more space and a 30 x 80ft. warehouse was added to the back of the existing building.
In the mid '90s, the commercial mower market began to expand rapidly. Hagan's had always catered to the commercial timber business with chainsaws. Realizing that commercial mowers would fit well into the business, Hagan's added the Scag and Grasshopper commercial mowers and Billy Goat blowers and vacuums. The name was also changed to Hagan's Outdoor Equipment to better describe the company
In the late '90s, Kubota compact diesel tractors, Farm King products, and Honda generators, pumps and mowers were added. Again, space was getting tight. In early 2001, Hagan's completed its latest expansions. The current, modern facility was basically built over the top of the existing building. It is 80 x 160ft. with showroom, shop, and warehouse in the same building. It has a 12 x 160ft. shed on the side to store repaired equipment and a loading dock in the back. We would say this building should accommodate Hagan's for the next 25 years, but we've been wrong too many times before. In 2002 the Cub Cadet line was added. 2007 marks our 50th in providing the best service around. We know that this years SALEBRATION will be bigger and better than ever.
