Nightpark Plant Nursery

Kildare based, young plant producer for the wholesale trade in Ireland and the UK. Nightpark Nursery is a specialist propagator of plug plants and 9cm liners, we produce grasses, perennials, wildflowers, bulbous plants and some woody species, primarily from seed. We have made seed germination our specialty since the nursery started in 2002. Much of the seed we use is collected on-site on in the local area thereby ensuring it’s freshness and ‘trueness to type’.

Plant List

Our plant list expands every year. Our own passion for plants means that we add varieties that we have come across to our production, we are also guided in our range by our customer requirements.  It takes time to bulk up numbers of certain species so we have many projects in the pipeline at any given time.  A visit to the nursery is a must if you want to see the interesting plants that we have in production.

About Nightpark Nursery

Nightpark Nursery was started on a Greenfield site in 2001. The field itself was known as ‘The Nightpark’, it was a sheltered field and was the resting place of choice for the animals on the farm- alas, it is no longer a place of rest! Thérèse Duffey has the botanical interest while husband Michael does the technical work- construction, potting and fixing everything that breaks.

We have a dedicated team of staff, Rita looks after plant orders and Raimonda spends her time transplanting seedlings.

The Range

We grow in excess of 300 species of plants. Our range includes grasses, sedges, herbaceous perennials, wildflowers, bulbous plants and woody species.

We specialise in ornamental plants from seed primarily for the wholesale trade. Our range includes natives from New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile and the Himalaya along with native Wildflowers from the local area. We obtain seed from seed houses worldwide but we also collect approximately 50% of our own seed, thereby ensuring it’s trueness to type and quality.
We are well known for our excellent clone of Uncinia rubra. We grow in excess of 50,000 of this species. Other specialities include Stipa gigantea, Hardy Cyclamen, and Eucalypts. We are continually adding to our plant catalogue depending on the needs of our customers.

About our product

We supply plants as plugs and also as 9cm liners. Most 9cm liners are contract grown and so need to be ordered in advance. We aim to have a wide range of plugs available year round.

Our plugs come in several sizes but 90% of what we sell is in a 45mm Elle pot. We produce our Elle pots on site using Bord Na Mona Compost. Our current compost is a peat-reduced mix. We add Bark and loam to the mix to ensure optimum plant health.

These preformed plugs are very easy to handle making potting a quick operation. They can be potted into a range of pot sizes from 9cm through to 2l depending on the crop and the timing.

We also offer machine sown seed of a range of plants in a 104 cell tray. Plants in this range include Aquilegia, Geum , Verbena, etc.

Getting the plants to you.

Nursery Awards

The nursery joined the Bord Bia Nursery Quality Programme in 2008 and indeed was the winner of ‘Best New Entry’ in that year.

The Bord Bia Quality Programme Auditor, Mr. Danny Elliott said:
Best New Entry - Nightpark

'Nightpark is a small recently established specialised propagation nursery with a very focused business model. It proceeded from entry to award within the first year in the Programme. This fast track to compliance can be explained by effective prioritisation, particularly with regard to the Critical Issues (health & safety, agrochemicals), and a willingness to embrace best practice and integrate it into the business processes.'

Our plant availability list is emailed monthly to those on our contact database.
