History
Röbäck is an urban area in Umeå municipality, located on the southern bank of the Umeälven, and one of Umeå's districts .
Carl von Linné mentions the village as 'Rödbäck' in his travelogue of his trip to Lapland in 1732. The name probably comes from the iron-rich water vein that flows by the village, Röbäck's spring, which in the 17th century became a source of health. The spring was already known as a source of health when Urban Hjärne mentions it in 1702.
In written sources, Röbäck is known since 1443. A hundred years later, 23 farmers live in Röbäck, and it is thus the largest village in Umeå parish. The coastal road between Stockholm and Torneå passed through the village. In addition to agriculture, there was also Umeå's inn. Agriculture was focused on livestock, flax, and grain, and the farmers had fishing rights in the river and the sea. At Kyrkberget, stone was quarried, including for Backenkyrkan. The village housed the gallows hill. The Russians burned the village in batches during the years 1719-1721.
During the Finnish War of 1808-1809, one of the two Swedish field hospitals was located in Röbäck, where a scarlet fever epidemic, spotted fever and other diseases broke out which killed 578 soldiers out of the 1,239 admitted.
One of the battles of the war stood in the village.
In the 20th century, agriculture began to wind down and industrialization took hold.
The village forge that started sometime between 1880-1885 grew into large-scale industry.
It is the village forge that is now Röbäcks Sweden AB.
