In 1981, math and science teacher Pam Rincker, was approached by a local chemical and fertilizer retailer to write a software program to manage inventory. This single request became the foundation of SSI and a dedicated line of agribusiness software solutions for accounting, formulation, nutrient recommendations, and field mapping. What began as a 2-person company over 30 years ago, has grown to employ over 100 dedicated staff today.
SSI's early customers consisted of small, independent retailers throughout the Midwest. Over time, the size and scope of Agvance customers grew to include more diversified organizations managing a variety of crops such as sunflowers and peanuts, and included grain elevators, feed mills and fuel facilities. Multi-location independents, cooperatives and national accounts were also adopting the Agvance suite of products to manage their businesses. The Agvance customer base grew quickly from locations primarily in the Midwest to locations throughout the United States and Canada including California, North Dakota, Texas, Colorado, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
In 1997, SSI formed an LLC with Helena Chemical Company after being selected as the software provider for all of Helena’s retail and wholesale locations throughout the United States. Two years later, SSI landed a contract with GROWMARK, Inc. to provide software for 400 of their member company locations. In 2005, the JR Simplot Company selected Agvance as the primary software to run their ag retail and distribution business. Today, Agvance is installed in over 2500 locations throughout the United States and Canada.
At the core of SSI's success is a commitment to placing the customer's needs first. Not only do we actively listen to customer requests, but a priority is also placed on participating in industry organizations, researching new technologies and identifiying opportunities to expand the Agvance product line in order to meet both industry and customer challenges.
