Solum is headquartered in the SOMA district of San Francisco. We also have a significant presence in Ames, Iowa, where we operate a state-of-the-art soil testing laboratory. Our customers include growers, agronomists and retail organizations throughout the Midwest.

The company is backed by Khosla Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz and Google Ventures. Our team of 25 people are experts from a broad set of disciplines — agriculture, software engineering, data science, physics, agronomy, finance and business.

Solum was founded in 2009 by a group of Applied Physics PhD students with a passion for creating information that can help improve the rapidly evolving space of precision agriculture. The team developed a novel way to measure nitrates in soils, which was launched with pilot customers as No-Wait Nitrate™ in 2011. Solum opened its facility to measure other nutrients and soil properties in the fall of 2012. The company is continuing to work on new soil measurements in collaboration with industry partners, and is working with select group customers to develop tools that support a broader set of operational needs.

The word “Solum” is a geological term for top soil, reflecting Solum’s beginnings in soil science and agronomy.
