Van der Knaap is a group of companies that specialises in developing high quality, organic solutions for rooting and growth of plants. By offering complementary activities, Van der Knaap has rapidly become one of the top companies in professional horticulture, both nationally and internationally.
In 1988 the company moved to a new location at Bovendijk in Kwintsheul in the Netherlands, where there was enough space to expand production. In 1990 they started producing glue plugs and two years later, paperpots. Under the name Horti-Services a new service was offered to the grower in 1993: washing pots, containers and trays.
Meanwhile, Fa. Van der Knaap had become a major user of potting soil. So it was a logical step to take over potting soil manufacturer Holland Potgrond in 1994. The company continued as the Van der Knaap Group. In 1999 the Van der Knaap Group opened a branch in Limburg in the Netherlands: Holland Potgrond Limburg. In 2008 the Van der Knaap Group formed a partnership with Braam Plug Products in Aalsmeer. This led to the formation of two branches of Van der Knaap: Braam BV for manufacturing paperpots and filling pots, containers and trays with one production plant in Aalsmeer and one in Kwintsheul in the Netherlands, and Van der Knaap Retail BV, which provides the consumer market with high quality coco potting soil products.
Coco peat was 'discovered' in the nineties as a raw material for potting soil; an organic and recyclable product with many possibilities for all types of cultivation. There turned out to be many applications for this raw material besides mixing it through potting soil. To market the pressed coco products, Forteco BV was added to the Van der Knaap Group. In 2000 Euro Substrates Ltd. was founded in Sri Lanka in order to exercise more control over the purchased coco peat. To meet the increasing demand for coco peat products, the first factory for producing coco peat was built in Sri Lanka in 2006. In 2009 and 2010 two more production facilities followed, one in the Dominican Republic and one in India. Production plants were also established in Thailand, Turkey and Spain. They mainly supply local markets.
The Van der Knaap Group aims to deliver sustainable and high quality products and services in the field of rooting and growing media for the international horticulture market.
