On behalf of the International Society for Horticultural Sciences (ISHS) and the Organizing Committee, I would like to invite you to the “International Symposium on Carob: A Neglected Species with Genetic Resources for Multifunctional Uses”. The Symposium will be held at the Rixos Downtown Hotel in Antalya-Turkey, from the 9th to the 12th of May, 2016.
The ISHS commissions/sections associated with this symposium are:
- Commission Plant Genetic Resources (primary endorser)

Background:
Carob is a native tree of the Mediterranean basin used in afforestation, in urban landscaping and in dry farming or supplementary drip irrigation for fruit production. The trees are resilient to dry climates and adapted to a wide range of soil types. Carob pods are used for food and fodder. The seed endosperms are used for locust bean gum (E410) production and the gum is used in various industries. The seed embryo (germ flour) contains a good balance in essential amino acids, which makes an interesting product additive for food industry.
Turkey owns rich natural carob populations in the Mediterranean and the Aegean regions. Antalya is a leading producer of carob, is well known in its agriculture production and is very attractive for tourists. Due to the coincidence that the 'Botanical Expo' will be held in Antalya from the 23rd of April to the 31st October 2016, this symposium is able to offer not only an attractive scientific program but also an interesting social environment.
The symposium:
The symposium is organized under the umbrella of ISHS for the first time. We intend to bring together researchers, farmers and people from the industry to share new knowledge and information on carob.
The symposium is planned to focus on a wide range of carob aspects including: Germplasm and cultivar selection, Biology and physiology, Propagation and rootstocks, Orchard management, Quality and Health benefits, and Industry, Marketing, Environmental and Economics.
We expect to create interdisciplinary discussions and communication between scientists, farmers and people from the industry. We will improve the knowledge of the current situation of the carob in the Mediterranean basin, such us surfaces, productions, cultivars and other characteristics of the major (Spain, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and Cyprus) and minor producing countries (Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria). With this information, section Economics; we could improve the knowledge of the current economic situation.
We are looking forward to seeing you in May 2016 in Antalya, Turkey and thank you in advance for participating and contributing to this symposium.
