Forest management and biotechnology: the case of a selective-logging regime
One of the most important instruments to support the sustainable development of forests, and reinforce the multiple services that they provide is the selective-logging regime. This paper aims to quantify the potential benefits of biotechnology under this type of regime. With this purpose, an empirical analysis is conducted to determine the optimal selective-logging management for a stand of Pinus ...

European forest types
Exectutive Summary The European forest types — Categories and types for sustainable forest management reporting and policy presents the findings of a study carried out by an international consortium of experts aimed at providing the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe (MCPFE) with an user‑friendly forest types classification. The primary goal of the scheme is to ...

The Role of Eucalyptus Globulus Forest and Products in Carbon Sequestration
Abstract This study is a contribution to the ongoing debate about the selection of the approach for carbon accounting in wood products to be used, in the future, in the national greenhouse gas inventories under the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Two accounting approaches are used in this analysis: the stock-change approach and the atmospheric-flow approach. ...

Old growth logging: does it matter if environmental protection costs jobs?
This paper examines the assertion that "environmental protection costs jobs", a point that is thematic in the Australian state of Tasmania where banning clear felling of old-growth forests is vigorously resisted because of associated job losses. The debate between "jobs" and "environment" protagonists often originates in disagreements about political power, economic growth, distributional ...

Variability in Leaf Area and Stemwood Increment Along a 300-year Lodgepole Pine Chronosequence
Large disturbances such as the 1988 Yellowstone fires produce considerable spatial heterogeneity in ecosystem processes across landscapes, in part by affecting vegetation structure. However, the persistence of this heterogeneity with time since disturbance, and thus the role of large disturbances in shaping the heterogeneity of ecosystem processes over large spatial and temporal scales, remains ...

The impact of subsidies on efficiency and production: empirical test of forestry in Japan
This study evaluates efficiency of forest management in Japan. Our results show that efficiency of forest management decreases over 25 years period from 1975 to 2000 on an average. The study indicates a substantial variation in efficiency across prefectures with a potential for output saving in the range of 40% on an average. Our econometric results seem to support the hypothesis that government ...

The influence of forest harvesting on landscape spatial patterns and old-growth-forest fragmentation in southeast British Columbia
Habitat fragmentation is considered one of the major conservation issues of recent decades. We tested predictions of landscape patterns in a 352,253-ha managed forest area in southeast British Columbia. We did this by focussing on forest fragmentation concerns among old-growth, harvest, and wildfire patches in 44 delineated landscapes using patch indices as measures of landscape pattern. We found ...

Health and environmental impacts of the hydroelectric fuel cycle
The impacts on health and the environment and the associated damage costs caused by the hydroelectric fuel cycle are assessed in this paper. To this purpose, a large hydroelectric project along the Nestos river in northern Greece has been selected as an example. A large number of impacts have been identified. Occupational accidents, impacts on agriculture and forests, noise produced during the ...
