    Measurement of oil content in jatropha curcas seeds for energy/environment sector

    The use of biofuels as a substitute for mineral petroleum-based fuels is now an important part of the world economy. This substitution process both minimises the use of irreplaceable mineral petroleum reserves and reduces the addition of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Jatropha Curcas seeds are a high oil content seed and are of particular interest since the plants grow on almost any terrain and do not compete for agricultural land required for food crops. The maximisation of oil content is the driving force behind oil seed breeding programmes and the measurement of oil in Jatropha seeds is important in both trading and processing. In both of these cases, a simple and reliable means of measuring the oil content of the seeds is required.
