The Association for Vertical Farming and Illumitex are proud to announce 97 teams from 24 countries are competing for the AVF award, the first global vertical farming competition of it’s kind.

On March 28, Vice Chair of the Association for Vertical Farming, Henry Gordon-Smith, hosted a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” with the ‘father’ of vertical farming, Dickson Despommier. Several questions were asked about vertical farming in general, the future of urban farming and the AVF competition.

“What excites us the most is that teams are looking at spaces and envisioning vertical farms in unexpected places around their location,” said Henry Gordon-Smith.

Teams are now participating in webinars and milestones leading up to the final concept submission and announcement of the winning team.

The first webinar kicked off with Illumitex VP of Hortitecture, Paul Hardej, informing teams the best procedures when choosing a site for your farm. Due to different climates of the 24 countries, the sites varied from a skyscraper in downtown South Korea to a rural field in Kenya. Most of the teams’ site selections are available in a Facebook album.

The second webinar on crop selection was hosted by Gordon-Smith including Jasper Den Besten, a professor at HAS University and judge of the AVF award, and Illumitex Regional Sales Manager Dennis Riling. The lesson covered what to look for, different methods for growing crops and how important marketing is when deciding on crops. At the end of the webinar, questions from the teams were answered by both experts.

“The webinars have been helping to inform teams on some details critical to completing their milestones,” said Gordon-Smith. “Over 40 teams have submitted the crops they plan to grow in their vertical farms.”

The next webinar is set to air April 21 with Illumitex Director of Research and Development Rebecca Knight on choosing the best lighting for a vertical farm.

“I am really proud of our team (Illumitex, AVF, and Food for Thought) for all their hard work in setting up the competition and getting the word out; I’m thrilled to see so much participation from our youth world-wide. Now it is up to me to deliver a webinar that provides useful and interesting information about lighting to this group of inspiring innovators and individuals,” said Knight.
