Organised by the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS), the VIII International Postharvest Symposium took place in Cartagena, Murcia, between 21 and 24 June.

With the slogan “Enhancing supply chain and consumer benefits:ethical and technological issues”, it brought together scientists and experts of recognised standing from all over the world, who analysed, shared and discussed the new scientific developments affecting the postharvest of fruit and vegetables.

For Bioconservacion it was a great pleasure to sponsor this event. We were there with a stand at which we presented our ethylene absorption technology to everyone present. In addition, we had the opportunity to participate in the international conference by undertaking a spoken presentation of a scientific study carried out at the Centre for Agricultural Research of the University of Costa Rica in San José, with the collaboration of Bioconservacion.

The title of the spoken presentation was: “Use of a potassium permanganate ethylene absorbent to reduce postharvest rotting in pineapple.'

In non-climacteric fruit such as pineapple, exposure to ethylene does not accelerate ripening, but it does accelerate senescence of the fruit. Senescence brings with it a number of changes that contribute to the weakening of the structure of the skin, and bring about the deterioration and rotting of the fruit.

It has been demonstrated that exposure to ethylene stimulates fungal growth in other non-climacteric fruit such as strawberries and citrus fruit. However, there are no scientific publications on the effect of ethylene on pineapple.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an ethylene absorber (Bi-On granulate) in extending the post-harvest life of pineapple. The results obtained, which will soon be published, were very positive and significant. They demonstrated that the absorption of ethylene is an excellent method for reducing the postharvest rotting of pineapple.
