Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) subcontractor BNL Technical Services has been awarded the Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The announcement was made at the 13th Annual DOE Small Business Forum & Expo held in Tampa, FL, on June 12.

BNL is an engineering services and technical consulting firm based in Richland, Wash. WRPS is a URS-led company responsible for managing 56 million gallons of highly radioactive waste at Hanford’s tank farms.

“BNL has been a key player in helping us accomplish many of our core objectives as the Hanford tank farms contractor,” said WRPS Small Business Program Manager Mari Roden. “With BNL, customer service and satisfaction go way beyond contractual requirements. Their thinking-outside-the-box approach has resulted in a number of solutions that have helped WRPS save both time and money.”

BNL completed $8 million in subcontracted work for WRPS in Fiscal Year 2013, 95 percent of which was won competitively. The company also recently earned an overall subcontract performance rating of 4.3 out of five.

“The Hanford site is a fluid environment and changes are often made last-minute due to unforeseen circumstances,” Roden said. “BNL continues to demonstrate exceptional responsiveness to meet our needs and we appreciate their willingness to work with us to help determine ways to do the job better.”

In 2012, BNL was awarded a contract to perform some surveying work at the tank farms. Although the project was previously awarded to a large business, BNL submitted a competitive bid that resulted in a cost savings of approximately 5 percent in the base year from the previous awardee.

“We’ve assembled a team of highly qualified project managers and engineers capable of providing the best solution to their clients,” said BNL President and Chief Financial Officer Wilson Stevenson. “We believe this award reflects that commitment to excellence. We’re thankful to the Department for honoring BNL and to WRPS for nominating us.”

An estimated 600 attendees were present at the small business expo to witness the award ceremony. The expo also featured lectures, educational workshops, vendor booths and business matchmaking sessions to facilitate DOE networking and partnering opportunities.
