CJP Finds Moringa & Flaxseed Couple Oil Crops to Make Communities Healthy, Wealthy and Sustainable

India October 16, 2012 -- Moringa homeland, India is all set to demonstrate the Genetics Agronomics and Horticulture advancement in moringa cultivation in upcoming GLOBAL MORINGA MEET 2012 from November 25-26, 2012 at Jaipur. With an effort to ‘grow beyond oil ‘, apart from Jatropha, CJP has been engaged in development of products that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs; products that improve health, generate a small footprint, create jobs, use renewable resources, etc. and happy to announce its findings as regards to Majestic Moringa in conjunction with Fabulous Flax as potential sources of Food and fuel

Increased interest in oil-seed crops for bio-fuels and petroleum replacements has renewed some interest in several oil-seed crops that were once quite common in India, including castor and flax. Centre for Jatropha Promotion & Biodiesel (CJP) is dedicated to the development of oil seed bearing trees - non-food multiple vegetable oil plantation and technologies in order to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, bring greater control and security of fuel supply and reduce dangerous climate changing emissions, including CO2. Global warming, greenhouse gas , food-versus-fuel, indirect land use change, deforestation—with these critical issues in the spotlight, the feedstock deficit -plagued industry badly needs less expensive feedstock in form non-food crop like Moringa oleifera , Flax, Castor & others

Moringa oleifera, a tree known for its vitamin-rich leaves and tolerance to drought is native toIndiabut has been used acrossAfricaand the tropics since ancient times, it is non-invasive and no problems have been reported concerning its interaction with other plants in native ecosystems. Moringa oleifera is a very fast growing tree; it commonly reaches four meters in height just 10 months after the seed is planted and can bear fruit within its first year. Its pods have oil rich black and winged seeds, which can be crushed to produce biodiesel. What separate this tree from other biomass food stocks are by far the invaluable effects it has on humans. The leaves, roots and pods are edible and are being used worldwide to aid in the fight against malnutrition in developing countries. And whilst the oil has traditionally also been used as a lubricant for fine machinery and as a vegetable cooking oil; leaders in the biomass field are now turning to Moringa as an alternative feedstock for the production of biodiesel.

One of the first domesticated crops, flax is also one of the most versatile crops of many more uses. Since ancient times it has been harvested for food, fibre and medicine. Flax seed is a major oil crop and one of the richest sources of omega-3 alpha linolenic acid (ALA) known to man. It is also rich in dietary fiber and is an excellent source of lignans and other antioxidants. Flax is more than just omega-3 fatty acids. It contains other healthy components that have wide-ranging benefits in multiple systems of the body. Flax is also rich in plant estrogens associated with reduced risks of breast, prostate and colon cancer.

Flax occupies a greater importance among oilseeds; owing to its various uses and special qualities. InIndia, it is grown mainly for seeds, used for extracting oil. The oil content of the seed varies from 33 to 47 per cent. Flaxseed oil is an excellent drying oil used in manufacturing paint and varnishes, oilcloth, waterproof fabrics and linoleum and as edible oil in some areas. Flaxseed-cake is a very good manure and animal feed. Flaxseed straw produces fibre of good quality. Flaxseed is used in making paper and plastics.

Flax is a cool temperate annual herb with erect, slender stems, 80-120 cm tall. A cultivated plant in closely spaced field conditions it has little branching except at the apex. Flax is native to the region extending from the eastern Mediterranean toIndia. It was extensively cultivated in ancientEgypt. Flax is grown both for its seed and for its fibers. Interestingly, the species name usitatissimum means, most useful. InIndiaflax has been under cultivation from pre-historic times. Flax fiber is the earliest vegetable fiber used by man. About 1.6 m ha is under flax cultivation and about 0.4 m mt of seed is produced annually. The plant yields oil of commercial importance. Flax has excellent potential for by-product development, and it has a high level of oil. The seed contains +40% oil which is a good source of biodiesel. Flax is a viable alternative oilseed for use in the biodiesel industry, although the inherent instability of the oil due to the high linolenic acid content is problematic. Modifications to the fatty acid profile and increased yield would make it an ideal candidate for use within the biodiesel industry.

Flax Seeds are rich in oil and protein and can be utilized on an industrial scale; such oil composition resembles safflower oil. Considering Flax’s potential as an oilseed feedstock for biodiesel CJP has honor to establish this untapped resource as alternative source for Bio- Diesel industry of future.

The biodiesel made from Moringa has e better oxidative stability than biodiesel made with most other feedstocks. M. oleifera oil has a high content of oleic acid (>70%) a result, the methyl esters (biodiesel) obtained from this oil exhibit a high cetane number of approximately 67, one of the highest found for a biodiesel fuel.

Flax seed and moringa both are excellent sources of many compounds that contribute to a healthy diet and lifestyle. There is now an opportunity to not only benefit from what these miracle or magic crops have to offer, but also make money from it as well. The Moringa oleifera & Flax have enough credentials: a higher recovery and quality of oil than other crops, no direct competition with food crops as being edible source of fuel, and no direct competition with existing farmland as can be grown for both purpose same time

The Flax Plant must be regarded as a sure source of 2nd Generation Biodiesel and the foundation around which a profitable Business plan can be built with combination of other nonfood biodiesel crops for its ability to a higher recovery and quality of oil than other crops, no direct competition with food crops and no direct competition with existing farmland as can be grown for fuel and fodder, both purpose same time

Estimates of yields, prices and cost vary greatly, making it difficult for potential growers to make informed investment decision about growing the Couple oil crop. The lack o f agronomic data about the couple oil crop (COC) growing makes it impossible to make investment decision on COC growing with the confidence and certainty associated with a decision to grow and establish a successful plantation. CJP identifies the Key elements in growing COC and their effects examined. And provide accurate information about the crop for potential COC investors and growers after performing feasibility study.

While talking on the Emergence of the new crop system in nonfood biodiesel industry Mr. Maharshi CEO CJP said” Moringa and Flax have excellent potentials for by-product development and haves a high level of oil. Modifications to the fatty acid profile and increased yield would make these crops ideal candidate for use within the biodiesel industry. Health and wealth are behind these crops of future. The combination of both crops may yield 1000 gallons to 2000 gallons per ha which may reach beyond 3000 gallon after maturity.”

“CJP’S Next GLOBAL MORINGA MEET in India ON 25 & 26 November, 2012 is all set to introduce you the real world of Moringa business” where the attendees shall also have the opportunity to interact with the science, agronomy and their cultivation technology etc. of Moringa and value additions. The registration is open”. He added.
