Closer to rapid detection of fruit flies invading Europe’s crops
Scientists work intensively towards healthy EU fruit crops. They collect biological and ecological data, and field test electronic traps and noses prototypes to create a holistic innovative approach on fruit flies’ invasion, from early detection to prevention.
The Annual Meeting brought up together more than 40 scientists from 16 countries (representing 21 project partners) to share progress and findings achieved during the 1st year of the project 'FF-IPM (Fruit Fly Integrated Pest Management) - In-silico boosted, pest prevention and off-season focused IPM against new and emerging fruit flies'. The Annual Meet up was held on 20 October 2020.
The overall project overview was presented by Prof. Nikos Papadopoulos from the University of Thessaly, project coordinator. Regardless of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and the seasonality of data collection, FF-IPM’s researchers managed to produce the high-quality results expected. Following a series of pitches, participants had the opportunity to attend the presentation given by Prof. David João Horta Lopes (University of Azores, Portugal) who outlined the main findings of the recently concluded European funded project “Euphresco”, offering a view on comparative research on the fruit fly’s challenge.
FF-IPM is a European Union funded research project that aims at generating tools, methods, and strategies to protect fruit production and trade from threats posed by fruit flies. Specifically, the project introduces “in silico” supported prevention, detection, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches for both new and emerging Fruit Flies. The FF-IPM project is expected to present a complete package for fruit flies’ prevention and management, developed by a multi-actor, transnational consortium, led by the University of Thessaly (Project Coordinator).
