Cornell IPM Division purchases RainWise weather stations
Twelve units of the MKIII weather stations manufactured by RainWise, Inc., of Bar Harbor, Maine, have been purchased by the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) division of Cornell University, New York.
IPM has, since 1996, been collecting weather data in an effort to track and forecast the optimum conditions for certain insects and plant diseases. This data then assists farmers in their pest and disease prevention efforts.
John Gibbons, a Technician at IPM, indicated that the new MKIII-LR weather stations were actually modified by RainWise, Inc. to accommodate their specific needs. The MKIII-LR “farm system” is a wireless, solar-powered weather station.
The IPM project was spearheaded by Assistant Director Curt Petzoldt, and is now overseen by Dr. Juliet Carroll. Cheryl TenEyck is a programmer at IPM who has set up the data models used in collaboration with the Northeast Climate Center, who houses and makes available the data to over 900 growers and agricultural processors in New York State. This free service is of interest to other research groups around the country, as well.
RainWise, Inc., is a manufacturer of weather monitoring systems for many industrial uses, including a line of HazMat products used by emergency service professionals.
